Organized by London School of Economics and Political Science in conjunction with Captain Consulting
This is a practical training approach to sustaining projects in a community-based and demand-driven development context. The outcome of this training will be an increase in the benefits of Community Driven-Development (CDD). Experienced facilitators that are faculty members of London School of Economics and Political Science are to anchor the training which shall be in two parts: Nigeria field training in Abuja and U.K. presentation and critique in London.

Date: May 5-7, 2009.
Venue: Rockview Hotel, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja.


Participants will receive training and visit selected field sites. Participants will work in groups with community members. There will be field work, data collection, and analysis of data. Participants at the end of the training in Abuja will be able to construct sustainability matrix, priority matrix, visioning matrix, and planning generally.

Knowledge and skills on social development, community participation, and teaching on participatory skills and methods
necessary for project sustainability will be demonstrated through presentations by the participants.

The training is designed for all General Managers, Task Managers, Project Officers and Senior Officers in public sub-sectors who handle the task of facilitating the implementation of community-driven projects by working closely with the urban and rural poor. It will also suit Policy Makers, Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries and Directors in various ministries and agencies such as Poverty Eradication, Women Affairs, and Planning Commissions amongst others.

The training objective is to foster a better understanding of community as a necessary change agent through capacity building and participation.

Participants at the course will among others:
• Learn Skills and Methods to motivate and involve local communities in their own development programmes.
• Learn methods to assess the process of community participation.
• Appreciate the importance of gender inclusion and the development of social capital
• Increase the quality of community-local government linkages.
• Increase ability to plan, monitor and evaluate with communities’ specific development programmes.
• Increase ability to support community to institutionalize and sustain project benefits
